A collectible (or collectable) is typically a manufactured item aimed at individuals to collect. For this reason, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural objects (such as, insects) and things manufactured for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Many items made for other uses, (for example toys), became so popular in the world of collectors that they are later targeted specifically to that group of collectors. To increase the appeal of collecting, manufacturers usually create a complete series of a given collectible, with each product differentiated in some fashion. The initial kinds of a product, designed in smaller batches before its collectible popularity has developed, oftentimes fetch huge prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, prove to be an outstanding investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will happen that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming massively valuable. These things are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these objects have occasionally been valuable enough to be marketed for great amounts of money.
