Advertising, Comics, Vanity, Perfume and Shaving, Rocks, Fossils, Minerals, Barware, Cultures, Ethnicities and Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes are merely seven examples to do with the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is typically a manufactured item aimed at individuals to collect. For this reason, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural objects (such as, insects) and things manufactured for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Many items made for other uses, (for example toys), became so popular in the world of collectors that they are later targeted specifically to that group of collectors. The high price for certain olders types of GI Joe figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon since the figures were originally meant to be bought as toys rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other goods, such as cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. goods that became popular started to developed an extra market and very often turned into the target of collectible crazes. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing accessories to improve the appeal of other goods.

To increase the appeal of collecting, manufacturers usually create a complete series of a given collectible, with each product differentiated in some fashion. Examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Enthusiasts will most often try to get together an entire set of the available variations.

The initial kinds of a product, designed in smaller batches before its collectible popularity has developed, oftentimes fetch huge prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, prove to be an outstanding investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will happen that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming massively valuable. These things are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these objects have occasionally been valuable enough to be marketed for great amounts of money. Some even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items in order to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, Historical Memorabilia or even Tools, Hardware and Locks, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
