Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Advertising, Casino, Science, Medical, Tobacciana, Animals and Fantasy, Mythical and Magic are merely seven examples of the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and meant for people to collect. Because of this, they are distinguishable from other objects of collections, which might also include natural things (for example, insects) and subjects made for uses other than collecting (e.g., items of apparel).

Many items manufactured for other purposes, (such as toys), became so in demand among collectors that they are later marketed directly to that audience. The expensive costs for several older kinds of Star Wars action figures is a good example of this extraordinary event because the figures were originally meant to be acquired as playthings instead of collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as incentives with other products, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular items started to developed an extra market and very often became the target of collectible madness. After a time many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of being used as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other goods.

In order to increase the appeal of collecting, product makers most often design a complete series of a given collectible, making sure that each product is different in some fashion. Examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Batman figures. Aficionadso will usually try to assemble an entire set of the available variations.

The early versions of a product, designed in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has started, sometimes fetch very high prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn into an outstanding investment.

In a very few cases, a chain of circumstances will take place that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming vastly valuable. These objects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have occasionally been worth enough to be marketed for plentiful amounts of cash. Some even go to great lengths to get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Trading Cards, Holiday, Seasonal, Pens and Writing Instruments, Tools, Hardware and Locks or even Science Fiction, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
