Holiday, Seasonal, Wholesale Lots, Metalware, Cultures, Ethnicities, Science, Medical, Furniture, Appliances and Fans and Decorative Collectibles are just a couple of examples of the hobby of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and meant for people to collect. Because of this, they are separate from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural items (e.g., beetles) and things made for purposes other than collecting (for example, items of apparel).

Some objects produced for other reasons, (such as toys), have become so in demand in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted directly to that audience. The high price for many older kinds of Star Trek figures is a good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally meant to be purchased as toys for children instead of collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette packs. goods that became popular developed a secondary market and sometimes turned into the object of collectible craziness. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing aids to improve the appeal of other products.

To encourage collecting, manufacturers typically manufacture a complete series of a certain collectible, ensuring that every product is differentiated in some way. Examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Addicts will usually try to get together an entire set of the available versions.

The early kinds of a product, designed in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has started, oftentimes get rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely turn out to be an outstanding investment.

Occasionally, a chain of events occur that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These subjects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have sometimes been valuable enough to be marketed for momentous amounts of cash. Some unscrupulous people even later destroy remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Housewares and Kitchenware, Casino, Science Fiction or even Tools, Hardware and Locks, now you know all about collectibles.
