Tobacciana, Postcards and Paper, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, Breweriana and Beer and Disneyana are just 7 examples of the business of collecting pieces. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is most often a manufactured item aimed at people to collect. For this reason, they are distinguishable from other objects of collections, which may also include natural subjects (such as, insects) and items produced for purposes other than collecting (e.g., cars).
Many things manufactured for other reasons, (for example toys), became so in demand among collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that group. The expensive costs for several older GI Joe figures is a particularly good example of this extraordinary event since the figures were originally intended to be acquired as children's toys rather than collectibles.
The earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Items that became popular developed an extra market and sometimes turned into the target of collectible madness. Eventually many collectible items started to be available separately, instead of being used as aids to marketing to increase the appeal of other goods.
In order to encourage collecting, manufacturers typically manufacture an entire series of a certain collectible, with every item different in some fashion. Various examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or differing designs of Batman figures. Fans will most usually try to collect a complete set of the available variations.
The initial versions of a product, designed in lesser quantities before its collectible popularity has developed, very often bring rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, prove to be a brilliant investment.
In a very few cases, a series of circumstances will happen that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming massively valuable. These objects are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these things have occasionally been worth enough to be sold for significant amounts of money. Some people even later get rid of remainders of such items in order to ensure forced scarcity.
So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Animation Art, Characters, Housewares and Kitchenware, Cultures, Ethnicities, Decorative Collectibles or even Banks, Registers and Vending, now you know all about collectibles.
