Bottles and Insulators, Science Fiction, Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Barware, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Housewares and Kitchenware and Fantasy, Mythical and Magic are just one or two samples of the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is typically something that has been manufactured which has been aimed at individuals to collect. In this respect, they are different from other things of collections, which may also include natural subjects (e.g., insects) and items made for purposes other than collecting (for example, clothes).

Some objects manufactured for other reasons, (such as toys), have become so popular in the collecting world that they are subsequently directly targeted to that group of collectors. The high price for several older kinds of Star Trek figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally intended to be purchased as toys for children instead of collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, for example cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Popular products started to see a secondary market and sometimes turned into the target of collectible craziness. After a time many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as accessories for marketing to improve the appeal of other items.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, producers most often create an entire series of a particular collectible, with each product differentiated in some fashion. Various examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Addicts will usually try to collect a complete set of the available versions.

The early kinds of a product, designed in lesser batches prior to its collectible popularity has ensued, oftentimes bring rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely become a spectacular investment.

Occasionally, a chain of circumstances will occur that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming exceedingly valuable. These items are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these objects have occasionally been worth enough to be available for sizable amounts of money. Some even go to great lengths to make unavailable remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Cultures, Ethnicities, Science, Medical, Animals, Advertising or even Disneyana, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
