Vintage Sewing, Pens and Writing Instruments, Tobacciana, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Militaria, Linens, Fabric and Textiles and Clocks are only a few examples of the business of collecting pieces. A collectible (or collectable) is typically an item that has been manufactured and aimed at people to collect. In this respect, they are separate from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural items (for example, insects) and objects designed for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Some things produced for other uses, (such as toys), turned out to be so in demand in the collecting world that they are later directly targeted to that audience. The top prices for several olders types of Star Trek figures is a really good example of this extraordinary event since the figures were originally meant to be bought as toys rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other products as incentives, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Items that became popular started to developed a secondary market and sometimes became the object of collectible mania. Finally many collectible items came to be sold separately, instead of being used as aids to marketing to improve the appeal of other items.

In order to increase the appeal of collecting, producers usually create an entire series of a particular collectible, making sure that every product is differentiated in some fashion. Some examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Batman figures. Lovers will most usually try to put together a complete set of the available variations.

The first versions of a product, manufactured in lesser quantities before its popularity as a collectible has begun, very often get huge prices on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely prove to be a brilliant investment.

Very occasionally, a chain of events will happen that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming exceptionally valuable. These subjects are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have occasionally been valuable enough to be marketed for hefty amounts of currency. Some people even go to great lengths to make unavailable remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Science, Medical, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Casino, Advertising or even Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
