Pens and Writing Instruments, Breweriana and Beer, Historical Memorabilia, Tobacciana, Transportation, Science, Medical and Fantasy, Mythical and Magic are only one or two samples of the hobby of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is usually something that has been manufactured which has been meant for individuals to collect. Due to this fact, they are distinguishable from other items of collections, which could also include natural subjects (e.g., beetles) and objects produced for reasons other than collecting (such as, stamps).
Many things manufactured for other uses, (for example toys), became so in demand in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted directly to that group of collectors. The exhorbitant costs for many olders types of Star Trek figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as playthings instead of collectibles.
Earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, for example cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Items that became popular started to developed an extra market and sometimes turned into the subject of collectible madness. Eventually many collectible pieces started to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as aids to marketing to improve the appeal of other items.
As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, product makers most often make an entire series of a given collectible, making sure that every product is differentiated in some way. Various examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Superman figures. Addicts will most usually try to collect a complete set of the available types.
The early variations of a product, made in lesser batches prior to its collectible popularity has ensued, very often bring very high premiums on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles hardly ever prove to be an outstanding investment.
Occasionally, a chain of events occur that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming exceptionally valuable. These things are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have very occasionally been worth enough to be sold for sizable amounts of currency. Some unscrupulous people even get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.
So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Vanity, Perfume and Shaving, Animals, Decorative Collectibles, Clocks or even Metalware, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
