The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically a manufactured item aimed at people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other subjects of collections, which could also include natural things (for example, insects) and objects designed for reasons other than collecting (such as, photos).

Many items manufactured for other uses, (e.g. toys), became so in demand amongst collectors that they are later directly marketed to that audience. The top prices for many olders types of Star Trek figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena since the figures were originally meant to be bought as children's toys rather than collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, such as cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular products started to see an extra market and very often turned into the object of collectible crazes. After a time many collectible items came to be marketed separately, instead of being made available as accessories for marketing to add to the appeal of other products.

To encourage collecting, producers usually make an entire series of a certain collectible, ensuring that every product is differentiated in some way.
