Science Fiction, Clocks, Advertising, Transportation, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Autographs and Historical Memorabilia are just one or two samples of the business of collecting items. The item known as a collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and aimed at individuals to collect. For this reason, they are separate from other objects of collections, which may also include natural subjects (for example, beetles) and things manufactured for purposes other than collecting (such as, cars).

Many items made for other uses, (e.g. toys), turned out to be so in demand among collectors that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that group. The top prices for certain older kinds of Star Trek figures is a really good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be acquired as playthings rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, for example cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Popular items developed an extra market and very often turned into the subject of collectible madness. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces started to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as accessories for marketing to improve the appeal of other products.

In order to encourage collecting, manufacturers most often design a complete series of a certain collectible, making sure that every item is different in some way. Examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Addicts will usually try to get together an entire set of the available versions.

The initial variations of a product, designed in smaller quantities prior to its collectible popularity has started, sometimes fetch rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles hardly ever prove to be a brilliant investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will happen that result in an object from a collectible series becoming remarkably valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have, now and again, been worth enough to be marketed for plentiful amounts of currency. Some even destroy remainders of such pieces to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested about collecting Rocks, Fossils, Minerals, Comics, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic or even Animals, now you know all about collectibles.
