The item known as a collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item aimed at individuals to collect. Because of this, they are separate from other objects of collections, which may also include natural subjects (for example, beetles) and things designed for purposes other than collecting (such as, stamps).

Quite a few items manufactured for other reasons, (e.g. toys), have become so in demand amongst collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that group of collectors. The exhorbitant costs for many older Star Wars action figures is a good example of this phenomenon since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as toys rather than collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, for example cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Popular goods started to developed a secondary market and very often became the target of collectible craziness. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of being made available as tools for marketing to increase the appeal of other goods.

To encourage collecting, product makers typically create a complete series of a certain collectible, with every item different in some way. Examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Zealots will most often try to collect an entire set of the available variations.

The first types of a product, made in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has begun, sometimes bring exorbitant prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely turn into a highly profitable investment.

Now and again, a series of events will occur that result in an object from a collectible series becoming surpassingly valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have very occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for great amounts of money. Some people even go to great lengths to get rid of remainders of such items to cause forced scarcity.
