Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Decorative Collectibles, Photographic Images, Autographs, Disneyana, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic and Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses are just a few examples of the hobby of collecting items. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically a manufactured item meant for individuals to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural items (for example, insects) and objects designed for reasons other than collecting (such as, items of clothing).

Quite a few things produced for other purposes, (e.g. toys), have become so in demand among collectors that they are subsequently directly targeted to that group of collectors. The high price for certain olders types of GI Joe figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be bought as playthings rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, for example cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular items developed an extra market and sometimes turned into the subject of collectible madness. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as tools for marketing to improve the appeal of other products.

In order to encourage collecting, manufacturers most often make a complete series of a certain collectible, with each product differentiated in some fashion. Examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Devotees will most usually try to assemble an entire set of the available kinds.

The early versions of a product, manufactured in smaller quantities prior to its popularity as a collectible has developed, oftentimes fetch very high premiums on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, become a spectacular investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will take place that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming enormously valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these things have very occasionally been valuable enough to be available for hefty amounts of money. Some people even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Knives, Swords and Blades, Housewares and Kitchenware, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Animation Art, Characters or even Science Fiction, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
