Metalware, Science Fiction, Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Disneyana, Advertising, Animals and Fantasy, Mythical and Magic are just 7 examples of the hobby of collecting items. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically a manufactured item meant for people to collect. For this reason, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which might also include natural items (such as, beetles) and things designed for purposes other than collecting (e.g., photos).

Quite a few objects made for other uses, (for example toys), became so in demand amongst collectors that they are later directly marketed to that audience. The top prices for several older kinds of Star Wars action figures is a particularly good example of this extraordinary event because the figures were originally meant to be acquired as children's playthings rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, e.g. cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to see a secondary market and sometimes turned into the subject of collectible crazes. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be sold separately, instead of being made available as marketing tools to add to the appeal of other items.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, producers usually make a complete series of a certain collectible, making sure that every item is different in some fashion. Various examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Devotees will most usually try to collect an entire set of the available types.

The first versions of a product, manufactured in smaller batches before its collectible popularity has started, very often command huge prices on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn into an outstanding investment.

Very occasionally, a chain of circumstances will occur that result in an item from a collectible series becoming especially valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these objects have sometimes been valuable enough to be available for substantial amounts of cash. Some unscrupulous people even later destroy remainders of such items in order to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Banks, Registers and Vending, Vintage Sewing, Historical Memorabilia, Decorative Collectibles or even Militaria, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
