Housewares and Kitchenware, Militaria, Postcards and Paper, Transportation, Pens and Writing Instruments, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball and Autographs are only a couple of examples to do with the hobby of collecting pieces. The item commonly called a collectible (or collectable) is most usually a manufactured item meant for individuals to collect. Due to this fact, they are different from other subjects of collections, which could also include natural items (for example, insects) and things produced for reasons other than collecting (such as, stamps).
Some objects designed for other purposes, (e.g. toys), turned out to be so in demand among collectors that they are subsequently targeted directly to that audience. The exhorbitant costs for several older GI Joe figures is an excellent example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be purchased as playthings instead of collectibles.
The very first collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, e.g. cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Items that became popular developed an extra market and very often became the subject of collectible mania. Finally many collectible items started to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as aids to marketing to increase the appeal of other products.
In order to increase the appeal of collecting, producers most often make an entire series of a certain collectible, making sure that each item is differentiated in some way. Some examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Fanatics will typically try to get together a complete set of the available versions.
The initial variations of a product, made in smaller quantities prior to its popularity as a collectible has started, oftentimes bring rediculously high prices on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely turn out to be a highly profitable investment.
In a very few cases, a series of events will take place that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming extremely valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these subjects have occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for considerable amounts of money. Some unscrupulous people even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.
So, whether you're interested in collecting Holiday, Seasonal, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Photographic Images or even Barware, now you know all about collectibles.
