Disneyana, Historical Memorabilia, Tobacciana, Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Science, Medical, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball and Tools, Hardware and Locks are just a few examples of the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item designed for individuals to collect. For this reason, they are separate from other subjects of collections, which could also include natural items (e.g., butterflies) and objects designed for purposes other than collecting (for example, stamps).
Some things made for other uses, (such as toys), became so popular amongst collectors that they are later targeted specifically to that group. The top prices for many olders types of Star Trek figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be purchased as playthings instead of collectibles.
The earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, for example cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Popular products started to see an extra market and very often became the target of collectible madness. After a time many collectible pieces started to be sold separately, instead of being used as tools for marketing to add to the appeal of other items.
In order to increase the appeal of collecting, producers most usually manufacture an entire series of a certain collectible, with each item different in some way. Examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Enthusiasts will typically try to assemble a complete set of the available kinds.
The first variations of a product, manufactured in smaller batches before its collectible popularity has begun, sometimes bring exorbitant prices on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely prove to be a highly profitable investment.
Very occasionally, a chain of circumstances will happen that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming exceedingly valuable. These objects are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these things have, now and again, been worth enough to be marketed for extraordinary amounts of cash. Some even get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.
So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, Trading Cards, Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, Religions, Spirituality or even Transportation, now you know all about collectibles.
