Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball, Postcards and Paper, Transportation, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone and Autographs are just 7 examples to do with the hobby of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is typically something that has been manufactured which has been designed for people to collect. Due to this fact, they are separate from other objects of collections, which could also include natural items (e.g., leaves) and subjects made for uses other than collecting (for example, items of apparel).

Quite a few things manufactured for other purposes, (such as toys), became so popular amongst collectors that they are subsequently directly targeted to that audience. The high price for certain older Star Trek figures is a particularly good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally intended to be purchased as children's playthings rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular items started to developed a secondary market and oftentimes became the subject of collectible mania. After a time many collectible pieces started to be sold separately, instead of being made available as accessories for marketing to improve the appeal of other goods.

In order to encourage collecting, manufacturers most often create an entire series of a particular collectible, making sure that every product is different in some way. Various examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Batman figures. Fanatics will usually try to put together a complete set of the available kinds.

The early versions of a product, designed in lesser quantities before its collectible popularity has developed, sometimes get exorbitant prices on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn out to be a brilliant investment.

Occasionally, a chain of circumstances will occur that result in a subject from a series of collectibles becoming enormously valuable. These subjects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have occasionally been valuable enough to be marketed for massive amounts of money. Some people even later destroy remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Science Fiction, Cultures, Ethnicities, Bottles and Insulators, Lamps, Lighting or even Tobacciana, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
