Banks, Registers and Vending, Breweriana and Beer, Disneyana, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Cultures, Ethnicities, Comics and Postcards and Paper are merely a few examples of the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item designed for people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other objects of collections, which might also include natural things (e.g., leaves) and items manufactured for uses other than collecting (for example, clothes).

Quite a few subjects designed for other reasons, (such as toys), turned out to be so popular amongst collectors that they are subsequently marketed specifically to that group. The top prices for several olders types of Star Wars action figures is a particularly good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally intended to be purchased as playthings instead of collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other products as incentives, such as cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Items that became popular started to see an extra market and oftentimes turned into the object of collectible mania. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces started to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as aids to marketing to increase the appeal of other items.

To increase the appeal of collecting, product makers most often manufacture a complete series of a given collectible, ensuring that every item is differentiated in some fashion. Some examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Fans will most usually try to collect an entire set of the available variations.

The first kinds of a product, made in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has ensued, sometimes bring very high prices on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely prove to be a spectacular investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will take place that result in an item from a collectible series becoming especially valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these objects have very occasionally been worth enough to be sold for massive amounts of currency. Some collectors even make unavailable remainders of such items to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Bottles and Insulators, Tobacciana, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball, Militaria or even Housewares and Kitchenware, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
