Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, Metalware, Photographic Images, Wholesale Lots, Animation Art, Characters, Clocks and Vanity, Perfume and Shaving are just 7 examples of the hobby of collecting pieces. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is usually an item that has been manufactured and meant for people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other subjects of collections, which might also include natural objects (such as, butterflies) and things made for reasons other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Many items manufactured for other uses, (for example toys), turned out to be so popular in the world of collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that audience. The high price for certain older kinds of Star Trek figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally intended to be purchased as children's toys rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, such as cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Items that became popular started to developed an extra market and very often became the target of collectible craziness. After a time many collectible items started to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing aids to improve the appeal of other goods.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, product makers typically make a complete series of a given collectible, making sure that every item is different in some way. Examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Fans will most often try to put together an entire set of the available kinds.

The first variations of a product, designed in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has started, oftentimes command rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely become a spectacular investment.

In a very few cases, a chain of events will happen that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming extremely valuable. These things are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these objects have, now and again, been valuable enough to be available for abundant amounts of currency. Some even later make unavailable remainders of such items in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested about collecting Comics, Housewares and Kitchenware, Pens and Writing Instruments, Casino or even Lamps, Lighting, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
