Comics, Housewares and Kitchenware, Metalware, Vintage Sewing, Decorative Collectibles, Linens, Fabric and Textiles and Bottles and Insulators are just one or two samples to do with the hobby of collecting items. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is most often an item that has been manufactured and designed for people to collect. Because of this, they are different from other objects of collections, which may also include natural things (e.g., beetles) and items produced for reasons other than collecting (such as, items of apparel).
Many subjects made for other uses, (for example toys), turned out to be so popular in the collecting world that they are later directly targeted to that audience. The top prices for several olders types of Transformer figures is a good example of this phenomena since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as children's playthings instead of collectibles.
The very first collectibles were included as incentives with other products, for example cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to developed a secondary market and very often turned into the subject of collectible crazes. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing accessories to add to the appeal of other goods.
As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, manufacturers usually make an entire series of a certain collectible, making sure that every product is differentiated in some way. Some examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Superman figures. Enthusiasts will typically try to collect a complete set of the available types.
The initial variations of a product, manufactured in lesser quantities prior to its popularity as a collectible has begun, sometimes command rediculously high prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely turn into a highly profitable investment.
Very occasionally, a chain of events will occur that result in a subject from a series of collectibles becoming inordinately valuable. These items are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these subjects have very occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for serious amounts of money. Some unscrupulous people even get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to ensure forced scarcity.
So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Science, Medical, Religions, Spirituality, Vanity, Perfume and Shaving, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball or even Autographs, now you know all about collectibles.
