Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Science Fiction, Advertising, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Clocks, Furniture, Appliances and Fans and Animals are just 7 examples of the hobby of collecting pieces. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item designed for people to collect. Due to this fact, they are distinguishable from other objects of collections, which may also include natural things (e.g., insects) and subjects made for reasons other than collecting (such as, clothes).

Quite a few items designed for other uses, (for example toys), have become so in demand among collectors that they are subsequently marketed directly to that audience. The high price for certain older Star Wars action figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena since the figures were originally meant to be purchased as toys for children instead of collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other products as incentives, for example cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Popular products started to see a secondary market and oftentimes turned into the target of collectible craziness. After a time many collectible items came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as aids to marketing to improve the appeal of other items.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, producers most usually manufacture an entire series of a particular collectible, ensuring that every product is differentiated in some fashion. Various examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Followers will typically try to collect a complete set of the available variations.

The initial types of a product, manufactured in lesser batches before its popularity as a collectible has ensued, sometimes command very high premiums on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely turn out to be a spectacular investment.

In a very few cases, a chain of events will take place that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these subjects have sometimes been worth enough to be marketed for plentiful amounts of money. Some unscrupulous people even later make unavailable remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Banks, Registers and Vending, Autographs, Postcards and Paper, Disneyana or even Photographic Images, now you know all about collectibles.
