The item commonly called a collectible (or collectable) is typically an item that has been manufactured and meant for people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other objects of collections, which could also include natural subjects (e.g., beetles) and items produced for uses other than collecting (for example, clothes).

Some things designed for other purposes, (such as toys), turned out to be so in demand among collectors that they are later targeted directly to that group of collectors. To increase the appeal of collecting, producers usually create a complete series of a given collectible, with each product different in some way. The initial versions of a product, manufactured in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has begun, very often fetch rediculously high prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn out to be a highly profitable investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances occur that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming surpassingly valuable. These objects are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these things have very occasionally been worth enough to be sold for ample amounts of cash. Some unscrupulous people even later make unavailable remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.
