Animals, Disneyana, Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Comics, Cultures, Ethnicities, Furniture, Appliances and Fans and Militaria are merely a few examples to do with the business of collecting items. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically something that has been manufactured which has been meant for people to collect. For this reason, they are separate from other items of collections, which could also include natural things (such as, butterflies) and subjects designed for uses other than collecting (e.g., items of clothing).
Quite a few objects produced for other reasons, (for example toys), became so popular in the world of collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that group of collectors. The exhorbitant costs for many olders types of GI Joe figures is a good example of this extraordinary event since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as children's playthings rather than collectibles.
The earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other goods, e.g. cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Popular products started to developed a secondary market and very often became the object of collectible craziness. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces started to be available separately, instead of being used as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other products.
In order to encourage collecting, producers usually create a complete series of a particular collectible, making sure that every product is differentiated in some way. Some examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Zealots will most often try to collect an entire set of the available versions.
The early types of a product, made in smaller batches prior to its popularity as a collectible has begun, oftentimes get rediculously high prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles hardly ever turn out to be a spectacular investment.
In a very few cases, a chain of events occur that result in a subject from a series of collectibles becoming especially valuable. These objects are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for hefty amounts of currency. Some unscrupulous people even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items in order to ensure forced scarcity.
So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Trading Cards, Rocks, Fossils, Minerals, Advertising, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball or even Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, now you know all about collectibles.
