Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Advertising, Vintage Sewing, Trading Cards, Photographic Images, Furniture, Appliances and Fans and Rocks, Fossils, Minerals are merely seven examples to do with the hobby of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and designed for people to collect. Because of this, they are separate from other items of collections, which may also include natural things (for example, butterflies) and objects manufactured for reasons other than collecting (such as, clothes).

Many subjects designed for other uses, (e.g. toys), became so popular among collectors that they are later directly marketed to that audience. The exhorbitant costs for several older kinds of GI Joe figures is a really good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be acquired as children's toys instead of collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, e.g. cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to developed an extra market and oftentimes turned into the target of collectible madness. After a time many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other goods.

To encourage collecting, product makers typically make a complete series of a certain collectible, making sure that each product is differentiated in some way. Various examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Enthusiasts will usually try to assemble an entire set of the available variations.

The early versions of a product, produced in smaller batches prior to its popularity as a collectible has ensued, sometimes fetch rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely turn out to be a highly profitable investment.

In a very few cases, a series of events will take place that result in an object from a collectible series becoming extraordinarily valuable. These subjects are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have, now and again, been valuable enough to be sold for plentiful amounts of cash. Some people even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Lamps, Lighting, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Science, Medical, Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes or even Barware, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
