Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Science, Medical, Cultures, Ethnicities, Tobacciana and Casino are just a few examples of the hobby of collecting pieces. The item commonly called a collectible (or collectable) is typically something that has been manufactured which has been designed for individuals to collect. Because of this, they are separate from other subjects of collections, which might also include natural items (for example, beetles) and objects made for reasons other than collecting (such as, stamps).

Quite a few things produced for other uses, (e.g. toys), have become so popular in the world of collectors that they are later directly marketed to that group. The exhorbitant costs for many older Star Wars action figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally intended to be bought as children's playthings instead of collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, such as cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Items that became popular started to see a secondary market and sometimes became the object of collectible mania. Eventually many collectible items came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing accessories to increase the appeal of other items.

To increase the appeal of collecting, manufacturers most usually design a complete series of a certain collectible, with every item differentiated in some fashion. Some examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Superman figures. Devotees will usually try to get together an entire set of the available variations.

The initial types of a product, manufactured in lesser batches before its popularity as a collectible has started, very often command very high prices on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles hardly ever prove to be a brilliant investment.

In a very few cases, a series of circumstances will happen that result in an item from a collectible series becoming extraordinarily valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these things have sometimes been valuable enough to be sold for hefty amounts of money. Some unscrupulous people even destroy remainders of such items to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Science Fiction, Housewares and Kitchenware, Rocks, Fossils, Minerals, Barware or even Decorative Collectibles, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
