The item known as a collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and designed for people to collect. Because of this, they are separate from other items of collections, which may also include natural subjects (e.g., leaves) and things produced for uses other than collecting (such as, items of clothing).

Many objects made for other reasons, (for example toys), turned out to be so popular among collectors that they are later directly targeted to that audience. The high price for several older kinds of Transformer figures is a particularly good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally meant to be purchased as playthings rather than collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as part of a package with other goods, such as cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Items that became popular developed an extra market and sometimes turned into the object of collectible craziness. After a time many collectible items came to be marketed separately, instead of being made available as marketing tools to add to the appeal of other items.

In order to increase the appeal of collecting, manufacturers typically make an entire series of a particular collectible, with each item different in some fashion. The first kinds of a product, designed in smaller quantities prior to its popularity as a collectible has ensued, oftentimes bring rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely turn into a highly profitable investment.
