Clocks, Housewares and Kitchenware, Militaria, Animals, Tobacciana, Disneyana and Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball are only a few examples of the hobby of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is usually something that has been manufactured which has been designed for people to collect. Because of this, they are distinguishable from other things of collections, which may also include natural subjects (for example, beetles) and items manufactured for reasons other than collecting (e.g., cars).
Some objects produced for other purposes, (such as toys), became so in demand amongst collectors that they are later targeted directly to that group. The exhorbitant costs for several olders types of Star Trek figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as toys rather than collectibles.
The very first collectibles were included as incentives with other products, such as cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular items started to developed an extra market and sometimes became the object of collectible madness. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing accessories to add to the appeal of other items.
In order to encourage collecting, product makers most often manufacture an entire series of a certain collectible, with every item differentiated in some way. Various examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or differing designs of Batman figures. Addicts will typically try to get together a complete set of the available variations.
The initial kinds of a product, designed in lesser quantities prior to its collectible popularity has developed, very often get huge premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely become a spectacular investment.
Very occasionally, a series of circumstances occur that result in an item from a collectible series becoming enormously valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for momentous amounts of cash. Some people even later destroy remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.
So, whether you're interested in collecting Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Bottles and Insulators, Animation Art, Characters, Historical Memorabilia or even Postcards and Paper, now you know all about collectibles.
