A collectible (or collectable) is most usually something that has been manufactured which has been meant for people to collect. Because of this, they are distinguishable from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural items (for example, beetles) and objects manufactured for uses other than collecting (such as, stamps).

Many things designed for other reasons, (e.g. toys), turned out to be so in demand amongst collectors that they are later targeted directly to that group of collectors. The high price for several olders types of Transformer figures is a really good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally meant to be acquired as toys rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, for example cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Popular items started to see a secondary market and oftentimes became the target of collectible craziness. Eventually many collectible items started to be available separately, instead of being used as marketing aids to increase the appeal of other products.

In order to increase the appeal of collecting, manufacturers usually manufacture an entire series of a certain collectible, with each product different in some way. Various examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Aficionadso will most often try to get together a complete set of the available types.

The early versions of a product, produced in lesser batches before its collectible popularity has developed, sometimes command exorbitant premiums on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles hardly ever turn into an outstanding investment.

Occasionally, a series of circumstances will take place that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming unbelievably valuable. These subjects are referred to as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have very occasionally been valuable enough to be marketed for vast amounts of money.
