Vanity, Perfume and Shaving, Militaria, Science Fiction, Clocks, Housewares and Kitchenware, Bottles and Insulators and Banks, Registers and Vending are only a couple of examples to do with the business of collecting pieces. The thing known as a collectible (or collectable) is most often a manufactured item meant for people to collect. In this respect, they are different from other subjects of collections, which may also include natural things (such as, leaves) and objects produced for reasons other than collecting (e.g., items of clothing).

Some items made for other uses, (for example toys), became so in demand in the world of collectors that they are subsequently marketed directly to that audience. The exhorbitant costs for many older GI Joe figures is a good example of this extraordinary event since the figures were originally meant to be purchased as toys for children rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other goods, e.g. cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to see an extra market and oftentimes turned into the subject of collectible mania. Finally many collectible items started to be available separately, instead of being made available as accessories for marketing to increase the appeal of other items.

To encourage collecting, product makers typically design a complete series of a given collectible, ensuring that each item is different in some way. Examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Addicts will usually try to assemble an entire set of the available versions.

The first variations of a product, designed in smaller quantities prior to its collectible popularity has developed, sometimes command rediculously high prices on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, become a spectacular investment.

In a very few cases, a series of circumstances occur that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming exceptionally valuable. These items are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these subjects have occasionally been worth enough to be marketed for substantial amounts of money. Some people even get rid of remainders of such items in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Historical Memorabilia, Photographic Images, Knives, Swords and Blades, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic or even Holiday, Seasonal, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
