Holiday, Seasonal, Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Cultures, Ethnicities, Historical Memorabilia, Comics, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball and Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes are merely seven examples of the hobby of collecting items. The item commonly called a collectible (or collectable) is most usually a manufactured item meant for people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other items of collections, which might also include natural objects (e.g., leaves) and things made for purposes other than collecting (for example, items of apparel).

Many subjects manufactured for other uses, (such as toys), became so popular among collectors that they are later targeted specifically to that group of collectors. The high price for several olders types of Star Trek figures is a really good example of this extraordinary event because the figures were originally intended to be bought as playthings instead of collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as part of a package with other goods, for example cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Popular items started to see a secondary market and very often became the subject of collectible craziness. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of the practice of being used as accessories for marketing to improve the appeal of other items.

To increase the appeal of collecting, product makers usually create a complete series of a given collectible, ensuring that every product is different in some fashion. Examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Fanatics will most often try to put together an entire set of the available variations.

The first versions of a product, designed in smaller batches before its collectible popularity has developed, sometimes command rediculously high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles hardly ever prove to be a brilliant investment.

Very occasionally, a chain of events will occur that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming enormously valuable. These things are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these objects have, now and again, been valuable enough to be sold for hefty amounts of currency. Some even later get rid of remainders of such items to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested about collecting Advertising, Autographs, Housewares and Kitchenware, Fantasy, Mythical and Magic or even Metalware, now you know all about collectibles.
