Holiday, Seasonal, Historical Memorabilia, Pens and Writing Instruments, Decorative Collectibles, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Science Fiction and Disneyana are merely seven examples to do with the hobby of collecting pieces. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is most often something that has been manufactured which has been designed for people to collect. For this reason, they are distinguishable from other things of collections, which could also include natural subjects (for example, beetles) and items designed for uses other than collecting (such as, items of apparel).

Quite a few objects manufactured for other reasons, (e.g. toys), have become so popular in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that audience. The top prices for many older GI Joe figures is a good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally intended to be purchased as children's toys instead of collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, for example cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular products started to developed an extra market and sometimes became the subject of collectible crazes. It didn't take long before many collectible items started to be marketed separately, instead of being made available as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other items.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, product makers usually design a complete series of a certain collectible, making sure that every product is different in some fashion. Some examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Addicts will most usually try to put together an entire set of the available kinds.

The early types of a product, made in lesser batches before its collectible popularity has developed, very often command huge prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles hardly ever prove to be a spectacular investment.

Occasionally, a chain of events will take place that result in an object from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These objects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these things have occasionally been worth enough to be sold for vast amounts of money. Some people even go to great lengths to make unavailable remainders of such items in order to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested about collecting Animation Art, Characters, Lamps, Lighting, Religions, Spirituality, Rocks, Fossils, Minerals or even Autographs, now you know all about collectibles.
