Pre-1940

Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Casino, Transportation, Photographic Images, Historical Memorabilia, Comics and Breweriana and Beer are merely a couple of examples of the hobby of collecting pieces. A collectible (or collectable) is most usually a manufactured item meant for individuals to collect. Because of this, they are distinguishable from other objects of collections, which could also include natural things (for example, beetles) and items made for purposes other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Many subjects manufactured for other reasons, (such as toys), became so popular among collectors that they are subsequently marketed directly to that audience. The expensive costs for certain older Star Wars action figures is a particularly good example of this extraordinary event because the figures were originally intended to be bought as children's playthings rather than collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included as incentives with other goods, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Items that became popular started to see a secondary market and sometimes became the subject of collectible mania. Finally many collectible items came to be sold separately, instead of the practice of being used as marketing tools to improve the appeal of other products.

In order to encourage collecting, manufacturers usually make a complete series of a certain collectible, with every product different in some fashion. Various examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or differing designs of Superman figures. Fanatics will typically try to assemble an entire set of the available types.

The early kinds of a product, designed in smaller quantities prior to its collectible popularity has started, oftentimes command very high premiums on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, become a spectacular investment.

Occasionally, a chain of events will occur that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming highly valuable. These subjects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these items have, now and again, been worth enough to be available for sizable amounts of cash. Some people even go to great lengths to make unavailable remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Pens and Writing Instruments, Militaria, Animals, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball or even Fantasy, Mythical and Magic, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
