Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball, Breweriana and Beer, Science, Medical, Animals, Photographic Images, Postcards and Paper and Disneyana are just 7 examples of the business of collecting pieces. A collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item designed for individuals to collect. For this reason, they are separate from other objects of collections, which may also include natural subjects (for example, beetles) and things designed for uses other than collecting (e.g., stamps).

Quite a few items manufactured for other reasons, (such as toys), turned out to be so popular amongst collectors that they are later targeted specifically to that group. The expensive costs for many olders types of Star Trek figures is an excellent example of this phenomena since the figures were originally meant to be purchased as children's playthings rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Items that became popular developed a secondary market and very often turned into the object of collectible craziness. Eventually many collectible items started to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as tools for marketing to add to the appeal of other products.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, producers typically create an entire series of a given collectible, making sure that each item is differentiated in some fashion. Some examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Zealots will most usually try to put together a complete set of the available kinds.

The early types of a product, made in smaller quantities prior to its collectible popularity has started, sometimes command very high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely turn into a highly profitable investment.

In a very few cases, a series of circumstances will take place that result in an object from a collectible series becoming extremely valuable. These things are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have sometimes been worth enough to be sold for momentous amounts of currency. Some even go to great lengths to make unavailable remainders of such pieces in order to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Vanity, Perfume and Shaving, Advertising, Pens and Writing Instruments, Science Fiction or even Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, now you know all about collectibles.
