The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is most usually an item that has been manufactured and designed for people to collect. Because of this, they are different from other items of collections, which might also include natural things (e.g., beetles) and subjects manufactured for purposes other than collecting (such as, cars).

Some objects made for other uses, (for example toys), became so in demand among collectors that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that audience. The expensive costs for many older Transformer figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon since the figures were originally meant to be acquired as children's playthings rather than collectibles.

The very first collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, for example cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Items that became popular started to see an extra market and very often turned into the subject of collectible madness. After a time many collectible pieces came to be sold separately, instead of the practice of being used as accessories for marketing to improve the appeal of other items.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, producers typically make an entire series of a certain collectible, with each item differentiated in some fashion. Some examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Devotees will most often try to put together a complete set of the available kinds.

The initial versions of a product, designed in lesser batches before its popularity as a collectible has begun, sometimes bring very high premiums on the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn into a brilliant investment.

In a very few cases, a chain of events occur that result in an item from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These items are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these things have, now and again, been worth enough to be marketed for abundant amounts of currency. Some even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items to ensure forced scarcity.
