Science, Medical, Cultures, Ethnicities, Linens, Fabric and Textiles, Disneyana, Tools, Hardware and Locks, Casino and Animals are only 7 examples of the hobby of collecting pieces. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is most usually something that has been manufactured which has been meant for people to collect. In this respect, they are separate from other items of collections, which might also include natural subjects (for example, leaves) and objects produced for uses other than collecting (e.g., clothes).

Many things designed for other reasons, (such as toys), have become so popular amongst collectors that they are later marketed directly to that group. The high price for several older GI Joe figures is an excellent example of this phenomena since the figures were originally intended to be bought as children's toys rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other products as incentives, e.g. cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to see an extra market and oftentimes turned into the subject of collectible madness. After a time many collectible items came to be sold separately, instead of being used as marketing tools to increase the appeal of other goods.

In order to encourage collecting, product makers most often make a complete series of a given collectible, ensuring that every product is differentiated in some way. Various examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Fanatics will typically try to put together an entire set of the available kinds.

The early variations of a product, manufactured in lesser quantities prior to its popularity as a collectible has developed, sometimes get huge premiums on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn into a highly profitable investment.

Very occasionally, a series of circumstances will take place that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming massively valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these subjects have sometimes been worth enough to be marketed for vast amounts of currency. Some even make unavailable remainders of such items to ensure forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Comics, Pens and Writing Instruments, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Tobacciana or even Trading Cards, now you know all about collectibles.
