Housewares and Kitchenware, Cultures, Ethnicities, Breweriana and Beer, Disneyana, Banks, Registers and Vending, Trading Cards and Casino are merely one or two samples to do with the business of collecting items. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is usually a manufactured item designed for people to collect. For this reason, they are different from other things of collections, which could also include natural objects (for example, leaves) and items manufactured for reasons other than collecting (e.g., cars).
Many subjects designed for other purposes, (such as toys), have become so popular in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that group. The exhorbitant costs for many older GI Joe figures is an excellent example of this phenomenon since the figures were originally intended to be bought as toys for children instead of collectibles.
The earliest collectibles were included with other products as incentives, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette packs. Popular items started to see a secondary market and very often became the object of collectible madness. Eventually many collectible pieces came to be available separately, instead of being used as marketing accessories to improve the appeal of other items.
In order to encourage collecting, product makers typically design a complete series of a certain collectible, ensuring that each product is differentiated in some way. Examples include football jerseys showing individual team players, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Fans will most often try to assemble an entire set of the available types.
The early kinds of a product, made in smaller quantities before its collectible popularity has started, sometimes bring very high prices on the secondary market. In the case of a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn out to be a spectacular investment.
Occasionally, a chain of events occur that result in an object from a series of collectibles becoming enormously valuable. These objects are known as collector's items because of their rarity, and these things have very occasionally been valuable enough to be sold for generous amounts of money. Some unscrupulous people even go to great lengths to destroy remainders of such items to ensure forced scarcity.
So, whether you're interested about collecting Knives, Swords and Blades, Tobacciana, Pez, Keychains, Promo Glasses, Religions, Spirituality or even Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
