Militaria, Transportation, Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone, Knives, Swords and Blades, Animation Art, Characters, Housewares and Kitchenware and Pinbacks, Nodders, Lunchboxes are merely one or two samples to do with the business of collecting items. A collectible (or collectable) is most often an item that has been manufactured and meant for individuals to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other items of collections, which may also include natural things (for example, insects) and objects produced for reasons other than collecting (such as, stamps).

Quite a few subjects designed for other uses, (e.g. toys), have become so in demand amongst collectors that they are later directly targeted to that audience. The high price for certain olders types of Star Wars action figures is a really good example of this extraordinary event since the figures were originally meant to be purchased as toys for children rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included as part of a package with other products, e.g. cigarette cards in cigarette cartons. Popular goods started to see a secondary market and very often became the target of collectible mania. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of being made available as marketing aids to improve the appeal of other products.

As a way of increasing the appeal of collecting, manufacturers most usually design a complete series of a given collectible, with every item differentiated in some way. Some examples include sports cards depicting individual players, or differing designs of Superman figures. Followers will usually try to assemble an entire set of the available variations.

The first versions of a product, made in lesser batches before its collectible popularity has begun, oftentimes fetch very high premiums on the secondary market. When it comes down to a mature market, collectibles rarely turn out to be a highly profitable investment.

Occasionally, a chain of events will take place that result in an item from a series of collectibles becoming hugely valuable. These subjects are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have sometimes been valuable enough to be available for considerable amounts of money. Some people even later make unavailable remainders of such pieces to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Historical Memorabilia, Postcards and Paper, Lamps, Lighting, Tobacciana or even Bottles and Insulators, now you know all about collectibles.
