Trading Cards, Advertising, Furniture, Appliances and Fans, Autographs, Breweriana and Beer, Tools, Hardware and Locks and Lamps, Lighting are just seven examples of the hobby of collecting items. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically an item that has been manufactured and aimed at individuals to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other items of collections, which could also include natural subjects (e.g., insects) and objects manufactured for purposes other than collecting (for example, stamps).

Some things designed for other reasons, (such as toys), turned out to be so popular in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that group. The exhorbitant costs for certain older kinds of Transformer figures is a really good example of this phenomena because the figures were originally intended to be acquired as children's toys rather than collectibles.

Earliest collectibles were included as incentives with other products, such as cigarette cards in cartons of cigarettes. Popular products started to see an extra market and sometimes turned into the target of collectible mania. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be marketed separately, instead of the practice of being used as tools for marketing to increase the appeal of other products.

To increase the appeal of collecting, producers usually make a complete series of a particular collectible, ensuring that each item is different in some fashion. Examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Beanie Baby. Devotees will most often try to assemble an entire set of the available versions.

The initial kinds of a product, produced in smaller batches before its popularity as a collectible has started, very often fetch huge premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely become a highly profitable investment.

Very occasionally, a series of events will occur that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have sometimes been valuable enough to be sold for considerable amounts of cash. Some people even go to great lengths to get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're fanatical about collecting Comics, Vintage Sewing, Metalware, Tobacciana or even Animation Art, Characters, now you know all there is to know about collectibles.
