The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is typically an item that has been manufactured and aimed at individuals to collect. In this respect, they are distinguishable from other items of collections, which could also include natural subjects (e.g., insects) and objects manufactured for purposes other than collecting (for example, stamps).

Some things designed for other reasons, (such as toys), turned out to be so popular in the collecting world that they are subsequently targeted specifically to that group. Very occasionally, a series of events will occur that result in a subject from a collectible series becoming inordinately valuable. These things are referred to as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have sometimes been valuable enough to be sold for considerable amounts of cash. Some people even go to great lengths to get rid of remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.
