Science, Medical, Arcade, Jukeboxes and Pinball, Disneyana, Animals, Autographs, Lamps, Lighting and Postcards and Paper are merely 7 examples of the business of collecting items. The item commonly known as a collectible (or collectable) is most often something that has been manufactured which has been designed for individuals to collect. For this reason, they are different from other subjects of collections, which could also include natural objects (such as, butterflies) and things produced for purposes other than collecting (for example, items of apparel).

Quite a few items made for other reasons, (e.g. toys), turned out to be so in demand amongst collectors that they are subsequently directly marketed to that group of collectors. The exhorbitant costs for several older Star Trek figures is a good example of this phenomenon because the figures were originally meant to be purchased as children's toys rather than collectibles.

The earliest collectibles were included with other goods as incentives, for example cigarette cards in packs of cigarettes. Products that became popular started to see an extra market and sometimes turned into the object of collectible craziness. It didn't take long before many collectible pieces came to be sold separately, instead of being made available as marketing tools to improve the appeal of other products.

In order to encourage collecting, producers most usually create an entire series of a given collectible, ensuring that each product is differentiated in some way. Various examples include tee shirts showing individual Disney characters, or different designs of Snoopy dolls. Zealots will usually try to get together a complete set of the available variations.

The first kinds of a product, manufactured in lesser batches before its collectible popularity has begun, oftentimes bring exorbitant premiums on the secondary market. When it comes to a mature market, collectibles rarely, if ever, turn out to be an outstanding investment.

In a very few cases, a series of circumstances will occur that result in an item from a collectible series becoming hugely valuable. These things are known as collector's items due to their rarity, and these items have occasionally been worth enough to be available for plentiful amounts of money. Some people even make unavailable remainders of such pieces in order to cause forced scarcity.

So, whether you're interested in collecting Barware, Holiday, Seasonal, Advertising, Tools, Hardware and Locks or even Decorative Collectibles, now you know all about collectibles.
